Medha Patkar (1954) is an Indian social activist who has dedicated her life to fighting for women’s rights, against land acquisition, nuclear plants and organizing workers. Medha initiated Narmada Bachao Andolan, a social movement for the rights of people affected by the Narmada river dams, which questions the social and environmental costs of the project and its anti-democratic planning. She has given voice to Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan in the fight for housing rights in the slums of Mumbai and founded the National Alliance of People’s Movements to facilitate unity and strengthen social movements.
